When asked what life was like before Ellen’s first symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) appeared, John Sutherland simply points at a framed photograph near his wife’s wheelchair.

The photograph shows the Sutherland family on a sunny afternoon in the backyard of their home, a smiling couple and two beautiful children, a moment frozen in time that hints at countless carefree days to come.
